A pre-purchase survey is strongly recommended before buying a boat. It can help identify defects, maintenance issues, signs of damage and likely repair costs, giving you a clearer picture of the vessel’s condition before you commit.
This depends on the type of survey required, but a survey will generally involve a thorough inspection of the vessel’s condition, structure and key visible components, followed by a written report with findings and recommendations.
For a full survey, yes. The vessel should ideally be out of the water for four to five days beforehand, depending on temperature and humidity, to allow meaningful moisture meter readings to be taken. A survey can sometimes be carried out while the vessel is in the slings, but reliable readings may be harder to obtain. If the vessel cannot be lifted out, a limited survey can be carried out and any restrictions will be noted clearly in the report.
A pre-purchase survey is carried out before buying a boat and is usually the most detailed option. An insurance survey is often requested by insurers to confirm condition and insurability. A condition survey is used to assess the general state of the vessel and may help owners plan maintenance, repairs or future work.
Many insurers request a survey, particularly for older vessels or when cover is being arranged for the first time. If you have been asked for a survey for insurance purposes, get in touch and we can advise on the most appropriate option.
Survey fees depend on a number of factors including the vessel’s size, type and location, the areas to be surveyed and any specialist testing or equipment that may be required. To receive a quote, please submit as much detail as possible using the survey booking form and we will be in touch to discuss your requirements before any work is carried out.
This depends on the size, type and complexity of the vessel. As a general guide, a comprehensive pre-purchase survey on a 30-foot boat typically takes a full working day. Larger or more complex vessels will take longer.
The full written report, which will typically run to between 10 and 15 pages and include photographs, will be with you within five working days of the survey. If you would like a general overview sooner, we can follow up by phone in the meantime.
